Many may not realize this, but having Diabetes can also affect safe and functioning erections. It is actually quite common for men who are diabetic to suffer from erectile dysfunction as well. In fact, men with diabetes have proven to face erectile dysfunction ten to fifteen years earlier than the average male without diabetes. Blood sugar is a huge part of any diabetic’s life, as their well-being depends on making sure their blood sugar is stable. It is oftentimes noted that patients who simultaneously suffer from both ED and diabetes have had a long history of poor blood sugar control. A lack of stable blood sugar damages nerves and blood vessels directly related to the penis and all other important body parts. Erectile dysfunction is not exclusively related to diabetes; it may also be linked to high blood pressure (see previous entry).

In order to achieve a healthy erection, men need blood vessels, male hormones, and nerves that are in good shape. A common misconception patients have about ED is that with the correct amount of hormones and desire, an erection should be obtained. However, without the adequate care of blood vessels and nerves, it may be a challenge to obtain a firm erection.

Men who suffer from erectile dysfunction often take medications for treatment, however this may be different for diabetic patients. These patients need to have a heightened sense of caution when trying these medications as they may interfere with other medications they may be taking. There are other first line of treatments these patients might be inclined to try such as sex therapy, or vacuum devices – all of which should be consulted with a specialist beforehand.

Once you are diagnosed with Diabetes, living with it every day is inevitable. However, it doesn’t have to be this way for ED. Speaking to a doctor may improve your quality of life and get you back on track to having the life you and your partner want.
